The Rhone (FrenchRhône) region is located south of Lyon. Shiraz, Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault grapes are blended together or used a single varietal (Like in Saint Joseph Pure Shiraz) and sun exposure ,which is quite permanent in the region, is ripening the grappes before harvest to produce strong red wines. Let us mention a few "Appelations" that will delight you Cote Rotie, Saint Joseph, Chateauneuf du Pape, Crozes Hermitage.... The region is divided into 2 subregions namely Northern Rhone and Southern  Rhone. The region major appelation in producing volume is Cotes du Rhone AOC. The first cultivated vines were probably in 600 BC. Well promoted by the Romans, this wine region lost interest when the Romans disappeared. It reappeared in the 13th Century when the Pope established in Avignon. Since then it continued to expand.
